A new optimization study of waterborne alkyd-amino coatings has identified a 7:1 resin ratio and a 30-minute cure at 403.15 K, or about 130°C, as the strongest balance of mechanical performance and chemical durability. The findings, based on orthogonal experimental design, also link the formulation to stable dispersion and favorable thermal behavior. The results provide a more precise curing profile for industrial coating applications.
In modern coatings production, waterborne alkyd resins paired with fully etherified amino resins as crosslinkers are a common route to improved overall coating performance. Using orthogonal experimental design, the study optimized curing parameters to produce a more stable technical approach for industrial use. It found that a 7:1 ratio of alkyd resin to amino resin, cured at 403.15 K for 30 minutes, delivered the best physical properties and mechanical stability.
The optimized profile and supporting kinetic data are summarized below.
| Parameter | Optimized result |
|---|---|
| Resin ratio (alkyd:amino) | 7:1 |
| Curing temperature | 403.15 K (about 130°C) |
| Curing time | 30 min |
| Activation energy (KSA/Starink methods) | ~195.8 kJ/mol |
Measurements of droplet size distribution and zeta potential confirmed that the composite resin emulsion at this ratio was highly uniform and stable in water. That microstructure was linked directly to the coating’s mechanical strength and chemical durability, supporting service life in end-use products.
Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the composite coating maintained good thermal stability during the third degradation stage, from 573.15 K to 733.15 K. Pyrolysis kinetics produced activation energies of 195.47 kJ/mol by the KSA method and 196.06 kJ/mol by the Starink method, a highly consistent result.
Using the C-R method, the study derived the reaction mechanism function G(α) = [−ln(1 − α)]³, indicating an S-shaped rate equation or random nucleation mechanism. The corresponding activation energy was 211.10 kJ/mol, with a pre-exponential factor of 2.22×10^16 min^−1. The thermodynamic parameters reinforce the case for the coating system in demanding environments.
